Sharon Chapter Turns Pop Tabs Into Wheelchairs for the Disabled

Evelyn Revivo of Torontos Sharon Chapter presents a check for a new wheelchair to Christene Rowntree. |
This past summer Torontos Sharon Chapter of JWI of Canada succeeded in gatheringfor the 12th timeone million aluminum pop tabs (which equals 1,000 pounds of aluminum). With this massive pile of tabs, they were able to provide a portion of the cost of a new wheelchair for Christene Rowntree of Bellwoods Centre for Community Living, bringing to a dozen the number of wheelchairs provided by the chapters Tabs for Wheelchairs project.
Evelyn Revivo, a member of Sharon Chapter, collects the tabs and sorts through them with the help of husband David. They then transport the tabs to a recycler, who pays about 50 cents a pound for the aluminum. Sharon donated the proceeds of the sale to Rowntree, who has been wheelchair-bound with cerebral palsy and juvenile diabetes for much of her life.
An upbeat woman who advocates for the disabled and participates in a number of organizations, Rowntree wrote to Sharon members to express her thanks. "The government has cut back on needs and this is just another one of their cutbacks," she wrote. "I cannot afford to get the equipment I need on my own. I cannot express how much I appreciate your generosity."
